HKU holds Inauguration Ceremony for New Students 2025-26
27 Aug 2025
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held an inauguration ceremony today (August 27) for the academic year 2025-26, welcoming a new cohort of undergraduate students into the university family.
This year’s inauguration ceremony adopted the theme – “Innovate the Future: Your Journey Starts Here”. In his welcoming speech, Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, highlighted the University’s pioneering role in AI education. Addressing the challenges and opportunities of the AI era, Professor Zhang encouraged students to embrace innovation while staying grounded in timeless values.
“The tools of our time will change and evolve, but the compass that guides a meaningful life will not. What remains central to our education is the commitment to make a difference – to add value, to serve, to create knowledge and to build. If you continue to hold these notions close to you, you will not be replaced. You will be irreplaceable. HKU stands ready to help you become that person,” Professor Zhang stated, wishing the new students a memorable and purposeful time at HKU, one that would serve as a beacon for their future.
HKU alumnus Dr Jack So Chak Kwong, former Chairman of the MTR Corporation and Hong Kong’s Airport Authority, delivered a speech as the Guest of Honour. Drawing from his impactful career, Dr So shared insights on his pivotal roles in developing HKU’s Centennial Campus and Hong Kong’s infrastructure, while reflecting on the city’s transformation. He urged students to embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead.
“HKU is home to my knowledge, also home to my personality. Armed with HKU spirit of passion, thirst for knowledge, optimism and courage, I was able to build a decent career for myself,” said Dr So. “Now we are entering the new economy, a 5D world that adds both digital and the virtual. You will face bigger challenges and ultimately gain greater satisfaction.”
About 1,500 students attended the ceremony at the Grand Hall or watched a live stream of the event in the nearby Lecture Hall of the Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre.
