16 Sep 2025
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) students Tam Git Mei (Cherry) and Lam Ho Wang (Harold) have been selected as recipients of the “Ten Outstanding Tertiary Students of Hong Kong 2025” award. Professor Kelvin Yeung, Dean of Student Affairs at HKU, attended the award ceremony, held on 13 September, to commend both students for their outstanding contributions in academic achievement and community service.
Tam, a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (Interdisciplinary Studies) student with a double major in Music (Piano Performance), credits HKU’s interdisciplinary curriculum as foundational to her growth.
“Over four years at university, I evolved from a pianist into an advocate for interdisciplinary learning, death education, and mental health awareness, while dedicating myself to creating innovative solutions to contribute to society as a budding entrepreneur. This journey deepened my understanding of my future aspirations and direction for impact, laying the groundwork for my path as a cross-disciplinary entrepreneur,” said Tam.
Lam, a recent graduate of the Surveying Department in the Faculty of Architecture and current United Nations Urban Planning intern, founded the Mapcraft initiative to address urban and social challenges.
“Many university students grapple with uncertainty about their futures—a reflection of broader societal issues. My goal is to become an urban scholar who combines research and teaching to promote age-friendly urban living and social inclusion. Last year, I founded Mapcraft to showcase the unique talents of autistic children and co-create intergenerational maps with local communities. I hope to expand this concept across districts, fostering vibrant communities where everyone can feel a sense of belonging,” shared Lam.
Professor Kelvin Yeung commended the public recognition of our HKU students, stating, “Their achievements reflect our unwavering commitment to whole-person development and the transformative merit of interdisciplinary education. These awardees are not only subject specialists, but also demonstrate as globally minded leaders who combine academic excellence with a deep sense of social responsibility, applying their knowledge to make meaningful contributions to the community.”
Organised by the Hong Kong Youth and Tertiary Students Association, the annual award identifies and nurtures tertiary students demonstrating academic excellence, civic responsibility, and commitment to societal progress. The initiative champions holistic development, inspiring future leaders to embrace social responsibility and contribute meaningfully to national advancement.
