The HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (HKU IDS) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) will host the Hong Kong Global AI Governance Conference 2026 on 10–11 April at the Rayson Huang Theatre. The Conference will bring together scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders from around the world to discuss emerging issues in artificial intelligence governance.
Organised under the Interdisciplinary Dynamics, Ethics, AI & Society (IDEAS) initiative, the Conference reflects HKU IDS’ commitment to advancing interdisciplinary dialogue at the intersection of technology, policy, and society. By bringing together diverse regional and disciplinary viewpoints, the event aims to broaden the global conversation on AI governance beyond prevailing geopolitical narratives.
The two-day programme will feature keynote dialogues, fireside chats, and panel discussions centred on key themes including AI and education, the conceptual foundations of AI, law and regulation, public governance, and global cooperation. Sessions will address issues such as explainability, accountability, and the societal impact of emerging technologies.
Distinguished participants include Dr Li Xu (SenseTime), Professor Tony Chan (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology), Professor Duncan Ivison (University of Manchester), Professor Lan Xue (Tsinghua University), Professor Cass Sunstein (Harvard Law School, joining via video contribution), and Professor Mark Wu (Harvard Law School), alongside senior representatives from international organisations and public policy institutions.
Professor Yi Ma, Director of HKU IDS, said, “Artificial intelligence is transforming societies and institutions at an unprecedented pace. Addressing its challenges requires collaboration across disciplines and regions. Through this Conference, we aim to foster dialogue that is internationally engaged and grounded in diverse perspectives.”
Professor Herman Cappelen, Chair of the Conference Organising Committee and Director of IDEAS, added, “This is not just another AI conference. It is a conversation the world needs right now.”
