HKU Champions Student Leadership with Successful Completion of Career Ambassadors for Social Mobility Programme 2026
29 Mar 2026
In a significant stride toward enhancing student leadership and community engagement, HKU concluded its first Career Ambassadors for Social Mobility Programme 2026 (Programme) from 13 January to 7 March 2026. Organised by the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), this groundbreaking initiative aims at empowering HKU students as career mentors for leading, inspiring, and driving positive social impact through career exploration activities designed for secondary school students. The Programme brought together 60 participants including HKU Student Career Ambassadors and alumni, secondary school teachers and students, employers and industry partners.
Emphasising student leadership and active community involvement, the Programme selected and trained 18 undergraduate Career Ambassadors to mentor 30 secondary school students from diverse backgrounds. Using a train-the-trainer model, the Career Ambassadors received professional training in social mobility, youth engagement, and career planning, and went on to co-create and deliver 4 signature career events for students from three partnering secondary schools: CCC Kwei Wah Shan College, Fukien Secondary School (Siu Sai Wan), and Henrietta Secondary School. Activities included interactive career skills workshops, HKU campus tours introducing students to university life, HKU alumni sharing sessions, and company visits to Gammon Construction and the Hong Kong Productivity Council, providing an eye-opening industry exposure.
The student-led model fostered strong connections between the Career Ambassadors and participating secondary school students. Students from the three partner schools gained opportunities to explore a wider range of career pathways, build self-confidence and broaden their horizons through first-hand industry insights. Career Ambassadors, in turn, strengthened their leadership, teamwork and communication skills while developing competencies in peer career mentoring, deepening their understanding of community needs and contributing to the wider society.
Employers and industry partners have highly recognised and supported the Programme:
Mr Ian Choy, Executive Director - People & Culture of Gammon Construction (Gammon), said:
“Gammon is pleased to support the HKU Career Ambassadors for Social Mobility Programme 2026, which enables students to gain clearer insights into our industry. We were equally impressed by students’ enthusiasm and thoughtful questions. Gammon remains committed to developing early talent and supporting long‑term industry growth, and we look forward to continuing more meaningful partnerships with HKU.”
Mr Brian Wong, Chief People and Culture Officer of Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), said:
“This partnership with the HKU Career Ambassadors for Social Mobility Programme 2026 has strengthened HKPC’s engagement with young minds in the field of technology, while also deepening our contribution to innovation and youth development. It provides a valuable platform for us to share industry knowledge and cultivate a pipeline of future talent aligned with Hong Kong’s technological aspirations. We value this collaboration and look forward to taking the initiative forward together.”
This pioneering initiative embodies HKU’s mission to foster responsible citizenship, advance interdisciplinary and co-curricular experiential learning, and strengthen the campus-to-career ecosystem. By partnering with alumni, employers and the wider community, HKU is empowering future leaders to create positive change in their careers and beyond.
